ABSTRACT:

Arctium lappa L. is a herbaceous plant that is both edible and medicinal, and it is a member of the Asteraceae family and common name is burdock or bardana. It has been used for centuries and is readily available in northern Asia, Europe, and North America. The roots, fruits, seeds, and leaves of the plant have all been widely used for their medicinal qualities in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The plant’s profusion of bioactive metabolites, which have exceptional therapeutic potential, has attracted a lot of scientific attention. A. lappa and its bioactive compounds have been shown to have a variety of positive effects, both in vitro and in vivo, including antimicrobial, anti-obesity, antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-allergic, antiviral, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective properties. Furthermore, A. lappa has been investigated in the field of nanomedicine, where its qualities are used to create sophisticated medicinal delivery systems, and it has demonstrated encouraging clinical applications. The ethnopharmacological applications, pharmacological effects, clinical trials, and nanomedicine applications of A. lappa and its bioactive metabolites are all thoroughly examined in this review. In order to fully realize the benefits of this plant for contemporary medicine, more attention is being paid to clinical research and industrial uses, especially in drug development and nanotechnology, given its wide range of therapeutic potential.
