Self-plagiarism occurs when an author reuses their own previously published work without proper citation, presents existing content as new, or fails to credit the original source. IJHMP considers self-plagiarism a form of plagiarism. For instance, if an author incorporates parts of their prior publication into a new manuscript without acknowledgment, it qualifies as self-plagiarism. To maintain originality and academic integrity, we provide Plagiarism X software to our editors and reviewers as part of our manuscript submission system.
A writing’s resilience to criticism and public trust depends partly on how well conflicts of interest are handled during writing, editing, and peer review. Conflicts arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have financial or personal relationships that could bias their work—also called competing interests or dual commitments. These relationships can influence judgment, even if individuals believe they do not. Financial ties, such as employment, consulting, stock ownership, honoraria, and paid expert testimony, are the most visible and potentially damaging. Other conflicts may stem from personal rivalries, academic competition, or strong intellectual views. Disclosure is crucial, especially in editorials and review articles where bias is harder to detect, allowing editors to assess and manage potential conflicts.
